2007 Fall Conference Information

Into the future!

Registration is Now Open for the Dec. 7, 2007 Conference

Help JAOS celebrate the end of an era and launch the new look of scholastic media in Ohio. We'll host the 77th -- and final -- JAOS conference while we launch the first workshops for Ohio Scholastic Media Association's Region 5.

Join as many as 500 high school media students and their advisers from across Ohio for a day of in-depth learning. Explore a topic … and then have enough time to apply what you’ve learned.

Sessions will again take place in the convenient facilities at Otterbein College in the Columbus suburb of Westerville.

The day-long conference features two-part workshops in more than 25 topic areas. In morning sessions, you’ll learn comprehensive media skills; in the afternoon, you’ll practice those skills in hands-on activities.

Most workshops feature both a classroom and newsroom professional to provide instruction through both theory and real-world experience.

This year’s topics cover a broad range, from in-depth reporting to broadcast journalism to law and ethics. Sample sessions include Beginning Reporting and News, Broadcast Journalism, Advanced Editing and Leadership, Newspaper Design Trends, and Digital Photography. (see list of topics)

Another way you can get a jump-start on our new statewide organization: Pay your OSMA dues now, and they’ll cover your membership from now until next fall. Your $75 covers ALL publications at your school plus their contests/critiques this spring. Not in your budget at the moment? Then pay the regular JAOS membership of $20.

The day’s schedule
• 8 a.m. Registration (Roush Hall Lobby)
• 9 a.m. Morning workshop sessions
• 10:30 a.m. Special Greetings (Cowan Hall)
• 11 a.m. Lunch
Advisers’ luncheon (Roush Hall)

• 12:30 p.m. Afternoon workshop sessions
• 2:30 p.m. Wrap-up

The conference begins with registration at 8 a.m., Dec. 7 at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio. The site offers plenty of computer labs, easy parking and movement around campus and great support from the Otterbein faculty.

The morning informational session begins promptly at 9 a.m., followed by special greetings and surprises for everyone from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Afternoon practicum sessions begin at 12:30 p.m. The day wraps up at 2:30 p.m.

Students have time to buy lunch following group session at nearby restaurants, listed in information you will receive. Advisers and speakers will have their lunch provided and will have a chance to network. The JAOS Annual Meeting also occurs at that time along with information about the NEW Ohio Scholastic Media Association.

All registrations MUST be postmarked by Nov. 12

To ensure all of your students receive their top picks for workshop sessions, please submit registration forms as soon as possible. All forms must be postmarked by Nov. 12 and arrive at the JAOS office at Kent State shortly thereafter.

Classes fill on a first come, first served basis.

Advisers will receive e-mail confirmations as soon as registrations are received and will get a list of students and their sessions by e-mail before Dec. 1. Confirmations will also include maps and parking information for cars and buses.

Registration costs and details

Workshop registration is required in advance.

Cost is $20 per adviser, which includes lunch, and $12 per student. This $2 special fee — a success at last year’s program — will all go to the Student Press Law Center. Last year JAOS contributed $1,000 just from the funds collected from this conference.

Registrations postmarked after Nov. 12 will be assessed a $5 per person late fee. Because sessions are filled on a first come, first served basis, late registrants may not get their top picks.
