| When I enter Kent State University,
will I become a major in the School of Journalism and Mass
Communication immediately?
If you have a high school GPA of 3.25 or
an ACT composite score of 24 you can become a JMC major immediately
upon entering KSU. If you do not meet either of these requirements
you enter KSU as as a pre-journalism major. You must have
a 2.75 GPA, a "B" average in your freshman English
classes and complete JMC 20003 Intro to Mass Communication
with a "C" or better before you can be admitted
as a Kent State JMC major.
What happens if I don't complete these
requirements in my freshman year?
You need to keep taking classes until you
meet the requirements.
What if I take a long time to meet these
requirements?
If you keep taking classes but don't progress
any further toward getting into a JMC major, you probably
should consider a different major.
How do I apply to the major?
If you have completed all the requirements
listed above, you should go to the College of Communication
& Information advising office (Room 202B Taylor Hall)
and request the form required for declaring your major. The
completed form should be mailed or carried to the JMC office
(Room 130 Taylor). Once approved by JMC, you will get a letter
stating that you have been accepted as a major. You also will
be given the name of your adviser.
Can I work for student media (Daily Kent
Stater, The Burr, TV2, WKSR) when I am a freshman?
You can apply or try out for any student
media position in your freshman year. Most student media have
try outs at the beginning of each semester. Stop by the Student
Media office on the first floor of Taylor Hall or call 330-672-2586
for more information about applications and try outs.
