Carl Schierhorn joined the JMC faculty in 1985 after four years as managing editor of Gannett's Iowa City Press-Citizen. He has a bachelor's and master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University. After graduation, he worked for the Rochester, N.Y., Times-Union, starting as a suburban reporter and ending as news editor.

Since joining the faculty, he has done consulting work with Gannett papers in four states. He coordinates the recruiting of outstanding high school seniors for the school and advises the student newspaper, the Daily Kent Stater.

His teaching specialties are writing, reporting, editing and newspaper design. His research includes studies of new media and newspaper management. He was a finalist for Kent's Distinguished Teaching Award in 1992.
