Mark Goodman joined Kent JMC in January 2008 as the school's first Knight Chair in Scholastic Journalism after serving 22 years as executive director of the Student Press Law Center in Arlington, Va.
Goodman has his undergraduate journalism degree from the University of Missouri – Columbia and a law degree from Duke University. He has been a guest or adjunct faculty member at several institutions including the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, the American University in Washington, D.C., Bowling Green State University and Virginia Commonwealth University. He also has served on the Advisory Council for the Department of Mass Media Arts at Hampton University.
Among the awards Goodman has received for his work with the student press are a First Amendment Award from the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, a First Amendment Award from the Society of Professional Journalists, the Intellectual Freedom Award from the National Council of Teachers of English, the Gerald M. Sass Award for Distinguished Service to Journalism and Mass Communication from the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication, the Louis E. Ingelhart First Amendment Award and the Reid H. Montgomery Distinguished Service Award from College Media Advisers, the Carl Towley Award -- the Journalism Education Association’s highest honor and the Gold Key from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
As both the Knight Chair and a lawyer, Goodman teaches classes in media law and in the master's program for journalism educators.
