Max V. Grubb, Ph.D. is a native of Medina, Ohio. He received a Bachelor of Science in Communication from Ohio University in 1979, majoring in Broadcast Management and Administration with a minor in Political Science.
Dr Grubb worked for 15 years in commercial broadcast management, programming, sales management, sales, and marketing. Beginning in 1979, Dr. Grubb worked for U.S. Broadcasting Company's WDBN-FM (Akron/Cleveland, Ohio), as an account executive, eventually promoted to Local Sales Manager. He left WDBN-FM in 1986 to take a position as General Sales Manager of Saga Communication's WYMG-FM, Springfield, Illinois. From there, he went on to U.S. Broadcasting Company's WKSW-FM in Springfield, Ohio, as General Manager. After successfully turning around WKSW-FM by changing the station's format and marketing, Dr Grubb accepted a position at newly acquired H & D Broadcasting's WBBW-AM and WBBW-FM as Regional Sales Manager. He then was hired by Legend Communications to work as Local Sales Manager and then Regional Sales Manager of WQXK-FM and WSOM-AM.
In 1994, Dr Grubb received a Masters of Arts in Media Management from Kent State University. From there, he attended Ohio University and received his Doctorate in Mass Communication in 1999. Dr. Grubb's dissertation, Political and Economic Reforms of Post-Communist Broadcasting: A Case Study of Estonia, is a historical, policy, and theoretical analysis of Estonia's broadcast system since it gained independence in 1991.
In addition to his interest in international comparative broadcast systems, Dr. Grubb has done work and research in the use of new media, specifically the Internet. He has done collaborative research with Dr.Tsutomu Kanayama comparing Japanese and American users of the Internet, research funded by the Japanese International Communication Foundation.
Dr Grubb has worked with various broadcasters from various countries, dealing with management, programming, marketing and sales, and policy issues. He currently resides with his wife, Jane Steinhouse and daughter Sophie in Silver Lake, Ohio, working as an assistant professor at Kent State University’ School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Dr Grubb’s main teaching focus is in the area of Electronic Media Management and International Comparative Media Systems and Issues. He teaches both undergraduate and graduate classes. Every year Dr Grubb takes students to England and France to explore their respective media systems.
