Joe Harper is a professor emeriti in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. He served as the School's director from 1981 to 1988.

Harper worked for 16 years in the newspaper business before joining the Kent State faculty. He was the managing editor of the Wichita (Kan) Eagle and the Raleigh (N.C.) Times. He also worked for St. Petersburg Times, Madison (Ind.) Courier and Suffolk Sun on Long Island.

Harper got his B.A. from DePauw University in 1962, and his M.A. (1975) and Ph.D. (1980) from the University of Texas at Austin.
