Gary Harwood

Gary Harwood has been a photographer for Kent State University for more than 24 years and chief photographer since 1987. He has won four national Circle of Excellence awards from The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and was named the 2001 University Photographers Association of America’s Photographer of the Year. His work has appeared in numerous national publications, including the Communication Arts Photo Annual and the Graphis Photo Annual. He received the 2006 Individual Artist grant for photography and the Artists and Communities grant from the Ohio Arts Council. Recently, Harwood was awarded the 2006 Ohio News Photographers Association’s James R. Gordon Ohio Understanding Award for a

multi-image photo essay on Growing Season, The Life of a Migrant Community. He teaches Visual Storytelling for Kent State University and was an instructor for the Unseen Cleveland photography project, a division of Unseen America, sponsored by the Service Employees International Union. He lives in Kent, Ohio, with his wife, Carole.
